The Canadian Centre for Unmanned Vehicle Systems (CCUVS) is a federally registered not for profit company, whose purpose is to facilitate sustained, profitable growth in the Canadian unmanned systems sector. CCUVS is governed by a Board of Directors, drawn from across Canada, representing academia, industry and government and working in air, ground and maritime unmanned systems environments. Head Office staff members are based at Medicine Hat Airport, Alberta, with other staff positions in Ottawa and elsewhere.

CCUVS activities and services include: unmanned systems standards work, influencing research, applications and technology solutions development, training, provision of facilities (such as access to test ranges and UAS launcher services), publishing studies, consultancy, promoting civil and commercial use of unmanned systems and stimulating Canadian economic growth.

Current objectives include:

  • Developing standards, initially for unmanned aircraft systems, which can be recommended to Transport Canada for use in the development of regulations to allow unmanned aircraft to fly alongside manned aviation in National and international airspace.
  • Expanding Knowledge, Awareness, Learning and Skills (KALS) across Canada in the unmanned systems sector. Knowledge-based advice, referral and consultancy.
  • Delivering services to Canadian organizations including a state of the art UA launcher, which can be made available throughout Canada, access to experimental airspace and test ranges and provision of Special Flight Operation Certificates.
  • Promoting Canadian exploitation of unmanned systems in both existing and new, innovative applications.
  • Promoting the formation of unmanned systems clusters across Canada to increase synergy, cooperation and the economic growth of the sector.
  • Encouraging both national and international investment in the Canadian unmanned systems sector.
  • Identifying Canada’s strengths in the unmanned systems sector and focusing research and development to produce integrated solutions.
  • Developing Test and Evaluation capabilities, in line with growing market demand, which are optimised for unmanned systems.
  • Marketing Canadian unmanned systems, facilities and services internationally.
